Will the Renogy 500A shunt monitor work with lithium and lead-acid battery banks?
Yes. Renogy lists lead-acid AGM and GEL, lithium iron phosphate, lithium-ion, and nickel-metal hybrid batteries across a 10V to 120V operating range. Compatibility still depends on placing every charging and load path through the shunt and keeping bank current within the monitor's 500A limit.
Where must the shunt be installed so the RBM500 sees both charging and discharging current?
Install the shunt in the battery bank's negative path: battery negative connects to the B- side, while charger, inverter, and other load negatives connect on the P- side. Any negative connection that bypasses the shunt will be invisible to the monitor and make its state-of-charge calculation inaccurate.
Does the Renogy battery monitor discover my bank's amp-hour capacity automatically?
No. The monitor measures current through its shunt, but the user must enter the bank capacity and synchronize the displayed state of charge when the battery is known to be full. Incorrect capacity or an incomplete calibration will produce a misleading remaining-capacity reading.
Which readings can I see on the Renogy 500A battery monitor while camping off-grid?
The display reports battery voltage, current, consumed power, remaining capacity, and battery degradation information. Its programmable high- and low-capacity alarms can provide a visible warning, but the monitor is not a substitute for the battery's BMS, fuse, or low-voltage disconnect.
What arrives with the RBM500, and do I need another heavy battery cable for the shunt?
Renogy includes the LCD display, 500A shunt, transparent shunt holder, 20 ft shielded monitor cable, and B+ wire. The high-current cable linking the shunt to the battery is not in that package list, so it must be supplied with the correct gauge, lug size, insulation, and protection for the bank.
