Product Overview

The BRAVO 50 DC is a 50A DC-DC solar charge controller with MPPT, built to charge a 12V battery system from both a solar array and a vehicle's alternator. The PowerCatcher MPPT algorithm tracks the solar array's maximum power point at greater than 99% efficiency, with stable performance in shaded or variable light conditions. Power conversion efficiency reaches up to 96%, using Buck MPPT regulation for the solar input and Buck/Boost regulation for the alternator input.

The controller charges from solar and alternator inputs simultaneously or independently, with selectable charging priority between the two sources. It is compatible with traditional and smart alternators at 12V or 24V. Charging profiles include 3-stage charging (Bulk, Boost, Float) for lead-acid batteries and 2-stage charging for lithium batteries with BMS communication. Protection covers over-temperature, overcharge, overcurrent, and reverse polarity conditions.

Communication options include Bluetooth, TTL, RS485, and CAN using the RV-C protocol, enabling real-time monitoring and configuration through an app or a wired interface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions about this product, setup, compatibility, and use.

Can the BRAVO 50 DC charge a house battery from the alternator and solar at the same time? Yes. Unlike the standard BRAVO 50 solar-only controller, model RS-MPPT50DC accepts alternator and solar charging sources and can use them simultaneously or independently. That makes it a combined mobile-charging controller, but each input still has its own voltage, current, wiring, and protection requirements. Does the 12V/24V wording mean the BRAVO 50 DC can charge a 24V house battery? No. The published 12V/24V specification applies to the alternator input. The supported house-battery system is 12V, with a listed 9-16V battery range. This distinction is critical when planning a van or RV system: a 24V alternator source can be supported, but the destination battery bank for this model is still 12V. What solar-array limits apply to the MPPT input on the BRAVO 50 DC? RICH SOLAR lists an 800W recommended solar input, a 55V DC maximum solar input, a 50A input-current figure, and a 17-36V MPPT operating range. Check the exact panel string against all four values. An array that fits the wattage recommendation can still be unsuitable if its voltage falls outside the tracking window or exceeds the maximum. Can I decide whether solar or the alternator gets charging priority? Yes. The BRAVO 50 DC lists selectable charging priority between the solar and alternator sources. That lets the installation favor the source that best matches the vehicle and energy plan, while retaining the ability to charge from either input. Configure the priority and battery charging mode for the exact system rather than relying on factory assumptions. How does BRAVO 50 DC charging differ between lithium and lead-acid batteries? The controller uses three-stage Bulk, Boost, and Float charging for lead-acid batteries and a two-stage strategy for lithium batteries with a BMS. Select the mode required by the exact battery manufacturer. A lithium-compatible label does not override the battery's permitted voltage, current, low-temperature, or BMS limits. Which monitoring connections are available on the BRAVO 50 DC? The controller lists Bluetooth, TTL, RS485, and CAN communication using the RV-C protocol. That provides more integration choices than a Bluetooth-only charger, but protocol support does not guarantee compatibility with every display or vehicle network. Match the intended monitoring device and cabling to the specific supported interface. Is the IP32 BRAVO 50 DC suitable for an exposed engine-bay or exterior mount? Do not treat the published ingress-protection rating as a fully sealed outdoor rating. The controller has a broad published operating range of -35C to +65C (-31F to +149F), but temperature tolerance is not the same as protection from direct water, spray, dirt, or road debris. Choose a protected mounting location that also meets the installation's ventilation and cable-routing needs.
